TAKE STEPS TO STAY WARM AND SAVE ENERGY
Oil heat customers can reduce energy expenditures by implementing these conservation tips from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin Focus on Energy.

Keep the furnace or broiler at peak efficiency by scheduling yearly maintenance and regularly changing the filter (on a furnace).

Use a programmable thermostat and set the temperature lower when you are away from the home or asleep, and warmer just before you return or wake up.

Close storm windows. Make sure storm windows are completely closed so no air leaks in or out.

Install Energy Star-rated appliances. When replacing appliances or electronics, consumers can find energy and money savings on a variety of qualified products including furnaces, boilers, washers and dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators and computers.

Use sunlight to warm the house. Open drapes, shades and blinds during the day on windows that face south or west.

Change the ceiling fan direction. With their direction reversed in the winter, fans create a gentle updraft that moves warm air from the ceiling and distributes it evenly throughout the room.

Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). By replacing five incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star qualified CFLs homeowners can save at least $60 per year. CFLs use 75% less energy then standard incandescent light bulbs.

Use plastic window coverings to reduce drafts through the window seals.

Caulk and seal leaky window and door frames.

Close the damper on your fireplace when it is not is use to prevent cold air from coming into the house.

Use the dishwasher only when fully loaded.

Check that no objects are blocking the heating vents, preventing heat flow.
